Tuesday afternoon we took the family to the Louisville Bat Museum for a tour. We have been there before, but the tour is free for children and it had been a while since we had been there. The nice thing about going in the winter as opposed to the summer (which was when we went before) was that it was the off season for baseball and so there wasn't a lot going on on the production line. That meant that we got to see some things that we hadn't seen before. We got to see them hand turn (or carve) a bat! So cool! They also took the time to show us each step of the process. We had a lot of fun. They also had a Christmas display and we watched a movie about the history of baseball. After that we headed over to a McDonalds for dinner. While we were there we saw some missionaries from a ward there in Louisville as well as Santa and Mrs Claus. The kids were so happy to see Santa and even got a candy cane!! We stopped for dinner right by the Louisville Mega Cavern which is where we were going to go see the "Lights Under Louisville."
We got there just before 6pm (which was when it opened) in hopes of being one of the first ones there. There were already LOTS of people there. Here we are at the entrance of the cavern. This is a man made cavern and it was HUGE!!!!! You drove your car through the cavern and the ride took over a half an hour. It was really cool. They had speakers all along the inside with music blaring. We rolled down the windows and enjoyed the music and lights!
It was sponsored by 5/3 so I had to take a picture of that! :) Once you got all the way in, they had you turn off your lights and drive through. Some of the displayed had moving/flashing parts. If you look closely, you can see that the soldier in this picture salutes. You can see the outline of the wire of the other lights if you look closely.
The lights were so pretty and fun in the dark cavern!
The first part you came to was the Kentucky Christmas! This was into the cavern about 100 yards. This is where you actually paid. The man that you see there is the guy that took your money. I was so glad that we came when we did. We had to wait about 15-20 minutes, but by the time we came out, there were 4 parking lots FULL of people waiting to go in to see the lights!!!
You can't have a Kentucky Christmas without horse racing! Horse racing is such a big thing here. Perhaps one of these years we will get to Turfway (which is only 10 minutes from our house) to see a horse race. :)
They had all sorts of themes in the cave. This one was for the 12 days of Christmas. They even had the 12 days of Christmas song playing at this part!
I loved the white Christmas display. You can see here too how tall and big the cavern was.
So pretty!
There were so many signs about Christ along with the lights. I thought that it was nice that it wasn't just about the lights and Santa, but that we could remember that Christmas is really about Christ.
I thought that this was a kind of fun display. I loved how they used the blue lights to make it looks like ice for the ice skaters!
I thought that the international display was pretty cool too. It had the pyramids, the leaning tower of Pisa, the Eiffel tower, Mt Rushmore, and a bunch of other things in it!
I especially loved the nativity. It was so pretty. It was actually bigger than this, but the one from far away that included the city of Bethlehem came out too blurry. I was really wishing that I hadn't forgotten my camera at home! Oh well!
And then it was time to head back on out the cave! It was such a cool place to see and visit. I was glad that we took the time to go and see the beautiful lights!!! :)
